Frédéric and his friends organized a circle of rich charitable ladies in Paris, the year was 1833. The name of the group was the Society of St Vincent de Paul and their aim was to help the poor and the sick of Paris. He arrived at a meeting of this circle carrying a young baby. He told the ladies that he has picked it up in the street in the gutter and asks which one of those ladies wants to care for it. (At that time children born out of wedlock were often abandoned in the street. Some were picked up but most died of cold or hunger, or both.) But the grand ladies turned away in disgust:
‘The fruit of sin!’ they said.

Frédéric replied:
‘But this little child could die! Hundreds of these children die every year in Paris alone?‘
One lady retorted: ‘
But that is quite natural. It is the punishment of sin!’ Isn’t that God’s will.

Then he got very angry and reminded them
‘When God wanted someone to die for sin – HE SENT HIS SON!
