“There are no visits of any kind to prisons in England and Wales at the moment, so whenever prisoners do get in contact ... and ask us to get in touch with their family in Ireland, we will be happy to do it,” said chaplain Fr Gerry McFlynn.

“We desire the opening of our churches and access to the sacraments. Until then, we are continuing to pray and prepare," says Cardinal Vin Nichols and four other archbishops.

“The uncomfortable things we say need not be judgemental or harsh, but simply counter-cultural.”

“For those who are experiencing domestic abuse, the home is far from being a place of security and self-fulfilment. Too often it is a place of suffering, fear, degradation and isolation.”

In 2016 3,265 women travelled from Ireland to England to have an abortion, down from 3,451 in 2015 and 3,735 in 2014. This represents a continual decline in the numbers since 2001, when the number of Irish abortions was 6,673.

“Over the past few weeks and months we have witnessed an unprecedented polarisation of attitudes on immigration and refugees, culminating in a dramatic and repugnant rise in race hate crime since the referendum.”
