All Masses in Belfast parish signed for the deaf

By Sean O'Donnell - 25 March, 2018

Fr Patrick Devlin

Last Saturday, the feast of St Patrick, the Parish of St Vincent de Paul, Ligoniel Road, Belfast, introduced signing (BSL Northern Ireland Sign Language) at all its public Masses.

Parish Priest, Father Patrick Devlin, who is also Chaplain to the Deaf Community in the Diocese of Down and Connor, is developing his sign language skills, and currently attends Part 1 of the Interpreter Course in Halifax, England.

Fr Devlin, quoting the Catechism of the Catholic Church said,”The Mass is the source and summit of all Christian Living, and therefore it is vital that every opportunity should be given for everyone to experience the Mass on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, through all Masses being signed, people who are deaf or hearing impaired can participate fully in the Mass.”

The parish has joined Church Services TV and its Masses are available live each day through both the parish website and the Church Services TV portal.
