Angels

30 November, 1999

We imagine angels as people all dressed in white with feathery wings. The word which the Gospel uses which we translate as angel means messenger. So these were messenger from God. Artists usually draw angels with wings because it symbolises there job to move with messages from God to men – from heaven to earth..

Of course anyone can be a messenger from God if they bring the story of the Gospel or the message that they are loved by God.

Anyway, these angels came to the shepherds while they were looking after their sheep and sang to them about the glory of God and how God wished all people to live in peace. The angels also said that the messiah had been born in Bethlehem.

Working it Out
1. Name five people in the Bible who were visited by angels? Which story sounds the strangest? How many angels are named? Clue: look up ‘archangel bible’ in google.com

2. Why do you think the shepherds went to see Mary, Joseph and the baby? Luke 2:8-20

3. How do you imagine God might communicate with people today? What would a ‘messenger from God’ look like?

4. Why do you think that people might imagine angels with big wings?
