The Pro Life Campaign’s deputy chairwoman, Cora Sherlock, has been listed among the BBC’s 100 women of 2014.
According to the BBC, the list brings to people’s attention influential women from around the world to watch for in the future.
Some of the women listed have already made headlines, such Obiageli Ezekwesili, the former Nigerian minister leading the global campaign to rescue the 250 children captured by militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
Others on the list include Michaela Bergman, Chief Counsellor for Social Issues at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; Lucy-Anne Holmes Founder, No More Page Three campaign in the UK; Muge Iplikci, a Turkish journalist; and Xiaolu Guo Chinese novelist and film-maker.
The Dublin-based solicitor is the only Irish woman included and she joins other activists, scientists, artists, businesswomen, writers and educators.
One-fifth of this year’s participants are under 25 years of age.
However, Cora Sherlock’s inclusion generated some negative social media reaction in Ireland among those opposed to her pro-life views.
Responding to the negative commentary on twitter, Cora Sherlock said she was “disappointed”.
“Just because you have a difference of opinion, that opinion shouldn’t be stifled,” she said.
The PLC spokeswoman added that despite her disappointment over the backlash against her nomination, she saw her inclusion on the high-profile list as a “fantastic honour.”
