The Bishop of Cloyne has said he is “deeply saddened” by the death by drowning of 10-year-old Kyle Roche in an accident in Youghal on Thursday.
In a statement on Friday, Bishop William Crean said his heart went out to the parents and grandparents of Kyle, to his brothers, his extended family, relatives and friends and to the community of Youghal parish.
Offering his condolences on behalf of the people and priests of the Diocese of Cloyne, he asked people for prayers for all those who are grieving.
“Let us also continue to pray for the safety of all who enjoy the water in these summer days,” he said.
Five people have lost their lives in drowning accidents in the last four days.
The body of a 17-year-old was recovered from a canal at Ardnacrusha, Co Clare on Friday evening.
His death followed two water tragedies on Thursday.
One claimed the life of a 19-year-old Roscommon man while the other claimed the life of Kyle Roche.
On Wednesday, 16-year-old Abayomi Adefabi died after being pulled unconscious from the River Liffey in Co Kildare, while on Tuesday, a 21-year-old woman drowned while night swimming with friends in a river at Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick.
Water Safety Ireland (WSI) has issued safety appeals as the heatwave has tempted more people to the sea and waterways.
