In 2017, a conference took place in Athlone entitled, “Abortion, Disability and the Law” which was jointly hosted by the Anscombe Bioethics Centre in Britain, and the Consultative Group on Bioethics of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The keynote speakers were; Bishop Kevin Doran, Bishop of Elphin and Chair of the Bishops’ Consultative Group on Bioethics, (‘Welcoming Children with Disability’) Professor Gerry Whyte, Professor of Law at Trinity College, Dublin (Repeal or replace? The legal implications of amending Article 40.3.3) and Dr Helen Watt, Senior Research Fellow at the Anscombe Bioethics Centre (Abortion legislation and foetal anomaly: reducing harm without moral compromise) were the keynote speakers and copies of their addresses are given below.
